Worldwide there are more than 3 000 subsea wells and the number is growing. To increase the oil recovery from these wells there is an increasing demand for an efficient subsea light well intervention service.
Traditionally this type of work has been done by movable drilling units (MDU). Light Well Intervention technology makes it possible to perform well intervention services from a monohull vessel.
The technology reduces the intervention cost down to one third when compared to traditional MDU operations enabling more intervention work and resulting in better exploitation of fields and reservoirs completed with subsea wells.
World's largest provider of RLWI services
In close cooperation with our alliance partners Island Offshore and FMC Technologies, Aker Solutions’ Well Service division has become the world’s largest and most experienced provider of downhole services through Riserless Light Well Intervention (RLWI). Since the start of spring 2006 the alliance has completed more than 100 well interventions with great success.
By gaining more experience being in continuous operations, the vessels and adherent technologies are in constant development and provide important contributions to design and construction of the second generation RLWI vessels.
At present time, Aker Solutions is performing RLWI operations from three vessels:
- Island Frontier - operational since 2006
- Island Wellserver - operational since 2009
- Island Constructor - operational since 2009
The large number of well interventions performed since 2006 verifies that the alliance is adding great value to our customers, being cost-efficient, time saving and reducing risks, when compared to traditional subsea intervention methods.
